European Union member countries are being asked to cut their gas consumption by 15-percent to prepare for possible gas shortages this winter due to Vladimir Putin’s Russian war in Ukraine.

E.U. leaders agreed in May to embargo most Russian oil imports by the end of the year as part of the bloc’s sanctions against Russia.

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister says a plan is in the works in this country to export more energy.

“We’re in discussions with Europeans,” Melanie Joly told CP24 Wednesday morning, “German Chancellor Scholz will be coming also to Canada very soon, and we will be discussing how we can export LNG (liquefied natural gas), but also how can we export hydrogen because we need to do both. We need to help the energy crisis in Europe but we need to continue to fight climate change.”

A Russian pipeline operator says it halted shipments of oil through Ukraine to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary over so-called “payment” issues.
