Hydro One says a massive power outage impacting a large section of downtown Toronto may have been caused by a crane that took out some high-voltage wires in the city’s Port Lands.

Crews are working to get the power restored to an estimated 10,000 customers as power will likely return to some areas more quickly than others. Motorists are reminded to treat any intersections where the traffic lights are out as a four-way stop.

There are no reports of injuries but crews rescued several people trapped in elevators.

The widespread outage affected numerous buildings, including the Eaton Centre, which was closed until around 3:15 p.m. due to the outage.

“The downed wires are still live to the best of our knowledge and there is still an electrocution hazard,” said Toronto Fire Service District Chief Stephan Powell.
