Ontario Premier Doug Ford is planning to expand strong mayor powers to municipalities other than Toronto and Ottawa as a way to get more housing built.

Speaking at a conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Ford said the legislation will provide those mayors with additional tools to advance those provincial priorities.

The Conservative government introduced legislation last week to give the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa veto powers over bylaws that conflict with provincial priorities, such as building housing.

There has been a housing crisis nationwide for the past several years with demand far outweighing supply. It’s regarded as one of the main reason why home sales and rental prices have skyrocketed over that same time period.
