Students planning to attend Western University this coming school year will be required to have at least one booster dose of a COVID vaccine and wear masks in classrooms.

The policy at the London,Ontario post-secondary institution, announced Monday, also extends to employees and some visitors to the campus.

Florentine Strzelczyk is Western’s provost and vice president.

She explains that the mandates have been put in place as a precaution.

“We have over 90 percent of our classes while other institutions are more online,” Strzelczyk told CP24, “We just want to make sure as we come together from all over the place for this term, that we are able to start without interruption.”

A statement says the university would reassess after the Thanksgiving weekend with a goal to lift the mask mandate as soon as possible.

The policy at Western University comes weeks after an announcement that the University of Toronto would require those living in residences to have a booster shot, and recommend all others keep their COVID vaccinations up to date.
