NASA hopes to attempt a launch of the Artemis space mission this Friday after being forced to cancel the originally-scheduled launch on Monday morning at 8:33am ET due to technical issues. If Friday is not possible, the next scheduled date would be Monday, September 5.

Engineers and other experts need to check on a number of technical issues that came up, including a hydrogen gas leak and a problem with one of the four main engines.

In addition to the technical glitches, there has been some unfavourable weather recently at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, including thunderstorms that delayed the propellant loading for the rocket.

It’s been reported that one of the four main engines failed to cool down as expected during comprehensive testing. While trying to resolve that issue, the team of experts noticed another problem, involving a vent valve higher up on the rocket.

The start of the Artemis mission is an unmanned crew, and will have a payload of three mannequins. Success of this program will lead to sending humans back into space and onto the moon. The ultimate long-term goal is to have manned missions to Mars.

If all goes as planned with this mission, Artemis is slated for its second launch in 2024 or 2025, with four astronauts who will orbit the moon, including a Canadian.

The last time the moon had human visitors was in December, 1972, as part of the Apollo flight program.
