She was the very first female solo artist at what became Motown records.
Mable John has died in Los Angeles.
Berry Gordy signed her to his new label in 1958. She was the first woman under his brand to get her own record deal without a group attached. She was also among several other artists who signed with Gordy at the time including Smokey Robinson, Eddie Holland and Mary Wells.
Mable was Billie Holiday’s opening act in Detroit during the ’50s and later backed up Ray Charles before pursuing a career in gospel music.
Mable John was 91.
