Now that producer Cameron Macintosh has announced “Phantom of the Opera,” the longest running show on Broadway, will close next February, the title of longest running will go to “Chicago.”
It celebrated its 25th anniversary last fall.
Another production of “Chicago” opened on Broadway in 1975. It ran for two years. But then in 1996, the Encores! program at New York City Center staged a bare-bones revival and it was so successful that it transferred to Broadway.
What will then be the second longest running show on Broadway?
“The Lion King.” It is preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary this fall.
“Phantom” will close February 18, 2023, a few weeks after its 35th anniversary.
As of last week the Broadway production of “Phantom” had been seen by almost 20-million people.
