Hurricane Fiona is expected to make landfall tomorrow morning in Atlantic Canada, with forecasters saying it will hit the region as a very powerful post-tropical storm. The storm is being characterized as historic in magnitude by meteorologists, bringing hurricane-force winds and more than 100 millimetres of rain to much of the region and parts of eastern Quebec.

Bob Robichaud of the Canadian Hurricane Centre told a briefing that Fiona is expected to pack a wallop.

“At the present time, it’s still a major hurricane and it’s only 900 kilometres away from us and it’s getting bigger so all that momentum is trapped within the storm so it’s very difficult for something like that to actually wind down as it’s approaching.”

Robichaud says dangerous winds, heavy rain, large waves and storm surge brought by Fiona could lead to prolonged power outages, wind damage and coastal flooding.
