We’ve learned that family doctors in Ontario left the profession at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic at double the rate of the years before.

New research from Toronto’s Unity Health indicates about 3-percent or almost 400 family doctors across the province stopped practicing between March and September of 2020, resulting in some 170,000 patients losing their primary care physicians.

Dr. Tara Kiran is the report’s lead author and practices family medicine at Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital says we need to address the issue by supporting more people to go into family medicine and primary care.

The report says as of March 2020, nearly 2-million Ontario residents did not have a family doctor and another 2-million or so had a family doctor older than 65 years of age.
