Those who followed the Solidarity uprising in Poland in the 1980s, will surely remember the military regime’s acerbic spokesman who turned his weekly news conferences in Warsaw into must see TV.

Jerzy Urban was the pugnacious press secretary for Poland’s Communist leadership during those troubled times.

From 1981 until 1989, every Tuesday at noon, he’d stride up to a dais in front of domestic and foreign correspondents and take on all comers, often responding with sarcasm.

He later became an an unlikely free-speech hero when his acid-tongued tabloid newspaper ran afoul of prime ministers and the pope.

Jerzy Urban has died at his home in suburban Warsaw.  He was 89.
