“The city is broken” was a major refrain heard during the recent municipal election campaign.

Now, we’re getting more details about Mayor John Tory’s plan to improve city services including garbage bins, a pledge he made recently on Zoomer Radio.

“We can do better, we must do better, and we will do better,” said Tory. At a meeting Thursday morning, Tory told the senior city administrators that the city needs to improve frontline services including damaged garbage bins.

“There are approximately 11,000 litter bins on our city streets now, the contractor Astral is responsible for repairing broken or damaged litter bins as well as well as regular cleaning and monitoring of those bins,” remarked Tory. “From June to September, 3,718 repairs of bins have been completed.

Tory says staff will work with garbage contractor Astral to make sure any broken or vandalized bins that cannot be repaired, be immediately removed and replaced.

The Mayor has requested a weekly report on how the city is doing on this front.
