As Ontario’s CUPE education workers begin day two of their province wide strike, a new survey from Abacus Data shows the majority of Ontario residents back the education workers in their job action against the governing Ford Progressive Conservatives.

Abacus CEO David Coletto says his company’s survey of more than 1000 adults this weekend found 62-percent blame the Ford government for the strike.

“I think this is an indicator of an underestimate of how the government might think that people would respond,” Coletto explained to CP24, “And also the sense of people wanting this conflict resolved and feeling that the provincial government hasn’t negotiated in good faith with those education workers.”

And Coletto says the big issue is the Ford Government’s use of the “Notwithstanding Clause” in the Constitution to impose a settlement and take away the right to strike.

There is a day long demonstration planned for Queen’s Park Monday, while the parties involved await a decision by the Ontario Labour Relations Board on the legality of the strike.

At 10am Monday, CUPE has scheduled a news conference at Toronto’s Sheraton Centre where the union’s national president will joined by national and provincial labour leaders to discuss further push backs against Bill 28, the so-called Keeping Our Kids in School Act.

Friday, most schools were closed when the workers went on strike and more are set to close Monday during a switch to virtual learning.
