As the prime minister and Canada’s top diplomat prepare to leave on a trip through Asia for the G-20 summit and other meetings, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly has strongly hinted at what the government’s long-awaited Indo-Pacific strategy will look like.
Speaking to the Asia Pacific Foundation and Munk School of Global Affairs at the U of T, Joly says ”the China of 1970 is not the China of today,” warning Canadians they need to be ”clear-eyed” about doing business with Beijing.
The strategy,  which is expected to be released within a month, is aimed at deepening Canada’s trading and security relationships with democracies and like-minded countries in the region, such as India.
However, Joly says it mus outline an approach to China, Canada’s second-largest trading partner after America.
”China is an increasingly disruptive global power.  It seeks to shape the global environment into one that is more permissive for interests and values that increasingly depart from ours,” Joly adds.
She also says Ottawa will train diplomats to become China experts as Canada takes a more cautious approach in its dealings with Beijing.
