A state of emergency has been declared for parts of western New York as our neighbours in the Buffalo-area brace for upwards of 120-cms of snow through Sunday. That’s 4 feet of snow!

Declared by Governor Kathy Hochul, the State of Emergency covers eleven counties and commercial truck traffic is banned from a stretch of the I-90 toll southwest of Buffalo.

For western New York, snow typically is no big deal. But this week’s lake effect snowfall in the region is expected to be “paralyzing,” according to The National Weather Service, when it hits the hardest-hit communities, including Buffalo, with periods of near-zero visibility.

The snowfall is expected to be at its greatest intensity between 7 p.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. Friday. The weather service also warned of accumulations of 2 feet or more of lake-effect snow in parts of northern Michigan through Sunday.

The infamous “Snow-mageddon” hit Buffalo in 2014 with over five feet of snow but forecasters say it’s ’s too early to say that much will fall this weekend but add it could be the worst event for the city of Buffalo in the past five or six years.
