School’s are open in Ontario today.
It did come down to the wire last night but a tentative deal was reached between the Ontario government and the union representing 55-thousand education workers, averting a strike in schools two weeks after the Canadian Union of Public Employees last walkout.
The union says both sides agreed to a 3.59 per cent raise in each year of the four-year pact.
But the union didn’t get all it wanted. It says it wasn’t able to secure the 100-million dollars in higher staffing guarantees for the educational assistants, librarians, custodians and secretaries, as well as an early childhood educator in every kindergarten classroom.
The deal still needs to be ratified.
