AG: ONTARIO'S DISORGANIZED COVID-19 VACCINE BOOKING SYSTEM, MILLIONS OF WASTED DOSES

The Ford government wasted 38% of COVID vaccine doses between February and June because it over-estimated demand for boosters.

Just one of the findings from the Ontario auditor-general, who also found the Conservatives ran a disorganized booking system and don’t fully track adult vaccinations.

Bonnie Lysyk says overall COVID vaccine wastage is 9% or 3.4-million doses, and that about half of that could have been avoided with better forecasting of demand.

Wastage rates varied quite a bit between public health units, and one private company wasted nearly 60% of its supply in the one year period ending last May, but the A-G says the province has not determined why.
She also identified problems with the system for booking vaccination appointments, as the province created its own portal, however nearly half of public health units are using their own, while some hospitals, pharmacies and private companies are using their own methods as well.

Lysyk says multiple booking systems encouraged Ontarians to ”vaccine shop.”

Who administered the shot also figured into how much they got paid.
Doctors received between $170 to $220 an-hour, nurses $32 to $49 and pharmacists $30 to $57 per-hour.
The AG also found the province did not consistently apply its prioritization process when it selected 114 hot spot communities to get shots ahead of lower risk neighbourhoods, which saw 9 high-risk areas excluded in favour of 8 low-risk communities.
Lysyk also underlined what many motorists in Ontario already know to be true.
They pay the highest insurance premiums in the country, with the average having increased 17% since 2017 to just over $1,642 last year.
The Ministry of Transportation also prioritized the building of 4 highway expansion projects, that its own experts would not have recommended, including Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass.
