The United Nations is requesting a record $51.5 billion in aid funding for next year from member states, as natural disasters and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine increase humanitarian needs worldwide.

According to the U.N.’s humanitarian office, the funds will be needed to assist 339 million people in 69 countries, an increase of 65 million people from 2022.

The appeal is a 25% increase over the one made for 2022, according to the statement.

The United Nations’ emergency relief coordinator stated that humanitarian needs are “shockingly high, as this year’s extreme events continue into 2023.”

Martin Griffiths cited droughts in the Horn of Africa, floods in Pakistan and the conflict in Ukraine.
