The sudden and unexpected death of a two-year-old at Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital this week is being investigated by Ontario’s Chief Coroner. The hospital says it cannot comment due to patient privacy. The coroner’s office says it investigates any death that is sudden and unexpected, but not necessarily deaths where there was a known disease.

A registered nurse posted a video online claiming the two year old child died on the floor in the emergency room because there were no stretchers.

Health Minister Sylvia Jones  is responding to the tragedy.

“I cannot imagine how challenging this must be for the caregivers, the family of that patient. I will let the investigation and the hospital do the work they need to do to communicate with that family. I don’t think any of us can comprehend how deeply saddened we are when we hear about the death of a young patient in Ontario.”

Meantime, B.C health officials confirm that six children have died from a flu-related illness this season.
