It’s highly unlikely Canadians will be going to vote in a general election anytime soon, but a new poll suggests the Conservatives still have a small lead in voter support over the governing minority Liberals, and have slightly widened the gap.

The Leger survey conducted over the weekend says 33 per cent of respondents would vote for the Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre and 30 per cent would vote for the Justin Trudeau Liberals if a federal election was underway.

Both parties were slightly down overall, with the New Democrats up to 21 per cent from 19 per cent in November.

The Green Party held steady at 4 percent support.

The national picture was not reflected in this week’s federal byelection in the GTA riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore.

“It’s a bell weather riding. I mean it moves back and forth. There are some years it’s held more prominently by one party or another,” explained Charles Sousa, who won the riding for the Liberals by a 14-point margin over the Conservative candidate.

He also told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, it is disappointing the voter turnout was so low.

Initial reports had the voter turnout as low as 15 percent, but Elections Canada later confirmed on Tuesday morning about 26-percent of eligible voters turnout to cast a ballot.
