Concerns are being expressed by union representatives for TTC special constables, fare inspectors and security personnel, after a rash of violent incidents on Toronto’s transit system, including as recently as Monday.

Toronto Police have arrested, charged and identified a woman who allegedly attacked six people on the TTC’s Line 1 subway between 9 and 9:30am Monday.

Investigators say 31 year old Amina Hassan randomly approached and attacked the six individuals who were on or near TTC property along the Yonge Subway line between Queen Street and Davisville Avenue and Davisville.

None of the injuries was serious.

Dariusz Nowotny, interim president of CUPE Local 5089, says the union was left out of a recent meeting among TTC CEO Rick Leary, Mayor John Tory, Toronto Police and ATU Local 113 during which safety concerns were discussed.

Nowotny says as of Monday, the union had not received a response, but he says he is “hopeful” the union will hear back soon.

The meeting was held days after the fatal stabbing of 31 year old Vanessa Kurpiewska in a random attack at High Park Station December 8th.
