Dozens of officers, members of the public and first responders paid tribute to a slain OPP officer at a Friday morning procession carrying 28-year-old Constable Greg Pierzchala’s body from Toronto to his hometown of Barrie.

“This young officer is one of the police officers who every single day get up and put their uniforms on and come to work as our guardians, our protectors and they are committed to keeping us safe and they do every day and when something as tragic and terrible as this happens, the least we can do is to be here and pay our respects,” said Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg.

One of the two suspects charged is 25-year-old Randall McKenzi who was granted bail after being initially being denied it just months ago in a separate case involving assaulting a peace officer.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling for criminal justice reforms in light of the officer’s death.

“What I’m proposing is the repeat violent offender who we know are going back to jail anyway because of their propensity to reoffend, that they just stay there in the first place.”

30-year-old Brandi Crystal Lyn Stewart-Sperry also faces a charge of first-degree murder in the case.

Pierzchala was responding to a vehicle in a ditch west of Hagersville Tuesday afternoon when he was fatally shot in an ambush.

His funeral will be held in Barrie on January 4th.
