Infectious disease specialists are cautioning Canadians about how COVID-19 is changing as another subvariant emerges.

Cases of XBB.1.5 or the Kraken subvariant have been detected in British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

“We are certainly at that point where COVID has a chance to mutate, both in North America and other parts of the world and when there are lots of cases that chance for mutations,” explained Dr. Lisa Barrett, who is an infectious disease expert.

She says while XBB.1.5 is the most infectious strain of COVID-19 discovered so far, there is no indication it causes more severe illness.

It is said to be a cousin of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
