Archaeologists in Norway claim to have discovered the world’s oldest runestone.

They claim the inscriptions are up to 2,000 years old and date back to the earliest days of the enigmatic history of runic writing.

The flat and square block of brownish sandstone, according to the Museum of Cultural History in Oslo, may be the earliest example of words recorded in writing in Scandinavia.

The runestone was discovered during an excavation west of Oslo in the fall of 2021 but was only announced on Tuesday, as the archaeologists needed time to analyze and date the artefact.

Items discovered in the grave where the runestone was discovered suggest that the runes were inscribed between A.D. 1 and 250.
