There’s a call for the City of Toronto to install more speed cameras after a dozens of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists in the first few weeks of 2023.

New Democrat MPP Jessica Bell who represents Toronto’s University-Rosedale riding says already this year in Toronto, 88 people have been hit by cars.

Four of them have died.

And she says there are currently only 50 speed cameras in the city.

“During the election campaign, John Tory said he would bring in 150 (cameras), but there’s no money in his budget to do that,” Bell explained, “Let’s get it up to that and see how we go. What’s also important to remember is we need safety cameras, but we also need the city to take road safety seriously and that means not just in enforcement but improving the design of our intersections and roads, bringing in more separated bike lanes where they’re necessary.”

The speed cameras are placed in community safety zones and are moved around every few months.

A statement from Mayor Tory’s office says the city is investing over $72-million in Vision Zero this year, more than any previous year.
