A stunning Impressionist masterpiece has been added to France’s national collection of art treasures.
“A Boating Party” by 19th-century French artist Gustave Caillebotte went on display Monday in the Orsay museum in Paris.
The work was funded by a $43 million euro ($62 million CDN) donation from luxury goods conglomerate LVMH.
The oil on canvas depicts an oarsman in a top hat rowing his skiff through calm waters.
It was one of the last Impressionist masterpieces still in private hands when it was sold by Caillebotte’s descendants.
