Not just here in Toronto, but most residents right across Ontario (71 percent) say they are feeling less safe using public transportation than they did a year ago.

A new Nanos survey also reveals two-thirds of respondents in the province say they are more or somewhat more cautious of their surroundings when out in an urban setting as a result of recent incidents of random violence in Toronto, primarily on the TTC.

Earlier this week, we learned the City of Toronto would be temporarily deploying 50 security guards to TTC property, in addition to hiring 20 community safety ambassadors, in an effort to prioritize safety on the transit system.

And last week, it was announced by Mayor John Tory, Police Chief Myron Demkiw and TTC CEO Rick Leary that 80 uniformed Toronto police officers would begin working overtime to patrol the TTC as a crime preventative.

Coincidence or not, this week has not seen the random incidences of violence on the TTC as in prior weeks.
