Some Zoomers will remember him as an American activist and journalist who went to jail for resisting the draft during the War in Vietnam and encouraging others to do the same.

David Harris, who was married to folk singer Joan Baez during that time, has died his home in California.

Though he was sometimes labeled a draft dodger, he was very much the opposite.  Harris advocated resistance, not avoidance, urging his fellow Stanford University students to return their draft cards to the government in protest of the war.

Harris was drafted in 1968, refused to report and was almost immediately indicted by the federal authorities.

Harris married Baez the same year.

He served 20-months in jail and was the subject of a Baez song called “Song For David.”

David Harris died Monday from lung cancer.

He was 76.
