The self-described “inappropriate relationship” that former Toronto mayor John Tory had with a person who worked in his office is being looked into by the city’s integrity commissioner.
Commissioner Jonathan Batty says Tory told him about the matter and asked him to review it on February 10, the same day the former mayor announced he would be resigning.
The scandal-tainted departure of Tory became official on Friday, setting the groundwork for a byelection for mayor that is anticipated to happen in late spring or early summer.
Batty said that he was conducting an investigation, but he opted not to elaborate.
When carrying out an inquiry, the integrity commissioner can summon evidence and examine witnesses under oath.
A code of conduct that governs the mayor and city council members states that they must avoid actual and apparent conflicts of interest and conduct their personal affairs in a way that encourages intense public scrutiny.
