The Ford government spent $6.4-billion less than expected in the first three-quarters of the current fiscal year, according to Ontario’s budget watchdog.
Financial Accountability Officer Peter Weltman says the province spent nearly $1.2-billion less on health, while about $3.5-billion was underspent in other areas such as the operation of Metrolinx, municipal transit and infrastructure.
The government is expected to spend about $129.2-billion in the first nine-months of this fiscal year, but the actual unaudited spending was about $122.8-billion; approximately 5% less.
Even though Weltman says it’s unusual for the province to underspend by this much; considering the recent average was between 2 to 3%, he adds it was not ”unexpected.”
Any unused funds would automatically go toward reducing the deficit, but the FAO officer adds he cannot say if that’s a ”deliberate motive” of the government.
