Toronto police are ending extra patrols on the Toronto Transit System that were introduced in January after several high-profile cases of violence in the system.
The boost in police presence was filled by 80 officers working overtime shifts that will now end with a return to regular proactive patrols on the transit system.
The increased police presence resulted in 314 arrests and 220 referrals to people in need of social supports like shelter, food and mental health services.
According to a news release, the Chief says police will still be present on subways and streetcars, but not a higher-than-normal presence.
“Officers will patrol during periods that typically generate the most calls for service and when there are many riders,” according to Chief of Police Myron Demkiw.
City manager Paul Johnson said last month that police would not be able to afford the overtime patrols — which cost about $1.5 million per month — past the end of winter unless additional funding was considered.
