Canadians will know within two months whether the special rapporteur on foreign interference will recommend there be a public inquiry to investigate Beijing’s meddling, and what the federal government knew.
The Prime Minister’s Office has released the mandate on former governor-general David Johnston’s position.
It says he will report regularly to Justin Trudeau, and must make a decision on whether there should be an inquiry by May 23.
The prime minister’s expecting Johnston to complete his review by the end of October.
”Additionally, he will identify innovative approaches and improvements in the way public agencies work together to combat foreign interference in our electoral processes,” according to a released from the PMO.
Johnston was appointed by Trudeau after pressure from opposition parties.
The Conservatives have been critical of the appointment, citing his relationship with the prime minister’s family and his role with the Trudeau Foundation.
