Premier Doug Ford says the new Mayor of Toronto has to be “fiscally responsible” and cannot waste money.

He made the comments moments after he told reporters he was refraining from commenting on the race for the city’s top job.

“I have a message to the new mayor, you gotta be fiscally responsible, you’re spending the hard working taxpayers money, you can’t be wasting money, and maybe I’m going back a little bit, but when Rob and I went down there, the first thing out of the city manager’s mouth was you have a $780 million dollar deficit and by the way, you have to raise taxes 20%, but we did the opposite.”

He’s also encouraging city council to review some election policies.

“The councillors stepping in there, they don’t have to step down unlike MP’s and MPP’s and I think council should review that but I will work with anyone, as I’ve shown with 444 municipalities, I’ll work with any Mayor who gets elected.”

Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter says she plans to resign her seat in order to run. The Scarborough-Guildwood politician and former education minister says she’s preparing to formally declare a mayoral bid next week.

Her resignation would cut the leaderless Ontario Liberal caucus from eight to seven.
