The Trudeau government is reportedly ready to spend $2.4-billion to help low-and middle-income households with inflation when its budget is tabled Tuesday.

Apparently Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will extend the GST tax credit that was doubled last fall for another six-months.

The so-called ”grocery rebate” does not require the money be spent on groceries or any other particular item but, according to a government source, will offset high costs such as food for about 11-million households.

An eligible single person with no children would get a one-time payment of up to $234, a senior about $225 and a couple with two children up to $467.

Other measures reported to be in the budget would see the ceiling on how much families can withdraw tax-free from registered education savings plans raised from $5,000 to $8,000.

However a one-time $500 top up to a rental housing benefit, that was brought in last fall and which expires the end of this month, will not be renewed.
