Just a week after announcing he’d refrain from commenting on Toronto’s mayoral race, Premier Doug Ford is telling voters not to support any mayoral candidate who wants to defund the police.

“Don’t vote for them, simple as that,” Ford told reporters. “Support the candidates that are going to fund the police, going to get get more police officers in our subways, in our streets, because I’ve never seen it this bad, ever.”

The Premier made the comments at a new conference when asked about violence on Toronto’s transit system, which includes the recent random and fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old boy in a subway station.

“We need full time police officers, in the busiest transit system in Canada, we need to give them resources and give them help, but enough is enough with this crime I’ve never seen anything like it, that should be the number one issue for any mayoral candidate.”

The premier also says Toronto should hire more police officers, but didn’t respond to a question about whether the province would invest money to help.
