There is another candidate in the race for Toronto’s next mayor.

City Councillor Brad Bradford has just confirmed his candidacy in the June 26th byelection, promising to be “a strong mayor of action” if elected.

The 36 year old Bradford is not revealing any platform planks beyond citing his priorities if elected, similar to what he said were priorities when he joined Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer on the Monday after John Tory announced he would be stepping down.

“Crime and safety is really important for a lot of people, top of mind, and transit and housing and all of that stuff,” Bradford told Libby.

Bradford joins a number of declared opponents including City Councillor Josh Matlow, former city councillors Ana Bailao, Georgio Mammoliti, and Rob Davis along with urbanist Gil Penalosa and former Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders, who joins Libby Wednesday at 12:30.

Toronto city councillors begin meeting Wednesday for the first time since former mayor John Tory resigned, after admitting to a relationship with a former staffer in his office.

The 3 day meeting will include an official declaration the mayor’s office is vacant and the passing of a bylaw requiring a byelection.

The city clerk has already set out a timeline for the race to succeed Tory, with voters expected to head to the polls on June 26th, but that plan is subject to council approval.

Nominations for the mayoral race would open this Monday April 3rd and close May 12th with advance voting June 8th to the 13th.
