A Manhattan grand jury’s decision to indict former U.S. President Donald Trump means he has now become the first former American president to be charged with a crime.

The vote to indict Trump on charges related to hush money payments made on his behalf to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign threatens his freedom after decades of legal investigations that have never resulted in serious consequences.

Prosecutors said they were working to coordinate Trump’s surrender, which could happen early next week.

Former FBI special agent Richard Frankel says security is going to be a huge challenge.

“This is going to cause a logistical nightmare for the city because of the protest and because the secret service is really going to have to keep him protected,” Frankel told ABC News, “I’m sure the FBI is working on any threats. They’re going to be looking at all of the intelligence that’s coming in for or against the president and threatening everyone else.

Police in New York City are bracing for possible violence in the wake of the Manhattan grand jury’s decision.

The NYPD has ordered every member of its force to report to work Friday morning in uniform.
