The five-alarm blaze at the Monastere du Bon-Pasteur, a 19th century former monastery, seems to have started in the attic and remains out of control a day later

despite the efforts of 150 firefighters.
Constructed in 1846, it retained its religious vocation until the 1960s.
The province of Quebec recognized it as a heritage site in 1979 and now serves several purposes, including a seniors’ residence, condos, a housing co-op, a daycare centre as well as cultural space.
The building’s also home to Heritage Montreal; a non-profit that promotes and protects the city’s cultural architectural heritage.
It’s not yet clear how badly damaged it is but the fire department says it does not believe it’ll result in a total loss.
The chapel in the centre of the complex, is one of the city’s most prestigious concert halls, known for its exceptional acoustics.
A pair of unique instruments that may not have been saved:  a Fazioli concert grand piano and a 1772 Kirckman harpsichord.
