Pressure is mounting on our federal government to expedite the repatriation of convicted war criminal Omar Khadr from the U-S military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The 25-year-old former Toronto resisdent is the last remaining western detainee there.

Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U-S soldier in Afghanistan when he was 15.  He became eligible to return to Canada last October under the terms of a plea deal.

His lawyers say they can’t understand why Ottawa has not formally followed through the plea-deal to request the transfer of Khadr.

Liberal Senator Romeo Dallaire, a longtime advocate for child soldiers, joined Khadr’s lawyers in making the plea.  He pressed the government for answers in the Senate’s final question period Thursday.

The government offered nothing new, sticking to its line that a decision would come in due course.
