The Boston Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 75th season at its summer home in Tanglewood by awarding its first medal to Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa.
Ozawa became music director at the BSO in 1973 after directing the Toronto and San Francisco Symphonies. He was in Boston for 29 years.
Ozawa was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in January 2010 and had back surgery to repair herniated disks the following year. He won’t be able to attend the medal presentation, but released a statement thanking the BSO for “this great honor of the first Tanglewood Medal.”
