Ernest Borgnine has died at the age of 95.

The gruff, gravel-voiced actor performed on Broadway in the Forties before moving to Hollywood. His first major role was as Frank Sinatra’s tormentor in “From Here to Eternity.” Two years later, he won an Oscar for “Marty”.

Borgnine became famous to a TV generation as the star of “McHale’s Navy”. But it cost him his third marriage to Ethel Merman after 32 days. She was reportedly jealous of the fan attention he received.

Borngnine was married five times. The fifth was the one that lasted.

Borgnine kept working right until the end. He was introducing himself to yet another generation as a voice on the “Spongebob Squarepants” TV series.
