Mayor Rob Ford wants Toronto’s gang members to leave the city and never be allowed back in. This comes in response to the shooting Monday night that killed two young people and wounded 23 others. Ford says the current punishment of three years for possession of a handgun is “nonsense.” The Mayor says serious hard time and banishment from the city would be more effective. Ford has a meeting scheduled on Monday with the Premier and says he will ask for more money for the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy where police teams target high-crime neighbourhoods. Ford also says he will ask the Prime Minister to introduce legislation to lengthen sentences for gun offences.
