Seventeen directors will compete for the top prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

It’s a relatively small selection compared with recent years when more than 20 films have competed. Americans Brian De Palma and Terrence Malick are the biggest names on the list.

They will vie for the coveted Golden Lion.

Both De Palma’s thriller “Passion” and Malick’s romantic film “To The Wonder” star Canadian actress Rachel McAdams.

“To the Wonder” will also be featured at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Venice Film Festival opens August 29th and wraps up September 8th, just as TIFF gets underway.
