Bebe Neuwirth has been chosen to star in the New York premiere of a play set during the 1835 premiere of Bellini’s opera I Puritani.
Four-time Tony winner Terrence McNally’s Golden Age sees the celebrated author returning to the world of opera. He wrote the Tony-Award winning Master Class whose central character was Maria Callas.
Neuwirth will play celebrated mezzo-soprano Maria Malibran, who starred in I Puritani.
The Manhattan Theatre Club is producing the play that will debut in the fall.
It will reunite Neuwirth with Walter Bobbie, who directed her in the hit revival of Chicago, which netted her a 1997 Tony for best actress in a musical.
