High Alert has been declared at the Charlton campus of St. Joseph’s Hospital’s in Hamilton, after a patient with C. difficile died.
Winnie Doyle is vice-president of clinical programs at the hospital and says the patient was elderly and had other health complications unrelated to c difficile.
The bacterial infection can be especially harmful to people with weak immune systems such as the elderly or ill.
An outbreak of C. difficile was declared Sunday after the discovery of 11 hospital-acquired cases of the superbug.
The last outbreak of C. difficile at St. Joseph’s Hospital was in the fall of 2010.
Sixty-five people were infected and twelve died in hospital.
