WEIGHT TRAINING DECREASES DIABETES RISK

Time to dust off the weights. 

A new U-S study suggests pumping iron can cut the risk of type 2 diabetes in men.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease linked to complications including blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease.

The study of more than 32-thousand men found those who lifted weights for at least two-and-a-half hours a week were nearly 35 per cent less likely to develop the disease.

Lead author, Doctor Frank Hu of Harvard School of Public Health, says the study demonstrates that weight training has benefits independent of aerobic exercise.

Hu says while aerobic exercise helps burns excess fat, weight training helps boosts muscle mass, which is very important for metabolism and insulin sensitivity.
