Canadians appear to be among the top buyers and sellers on a new online site for illegal drugs.
The website is called Silk Road.
Prominent Internet activist Amir Taaki says that the digital currency Bitcoin provides illicit websites a way to hide transactions, but “the perpetrators and not the technology should be blamed.”
The website also has an anonymous software to conceal the identity of users, making it difficult for police to locate the site’s servers or its participants. Total revenues of the site are almost $2-million a month. Canada ranks fifth on the list of the website’s most frequent shipping origins and destinations.
Marijuana is the top-selling drug on the website, accounting for almost 14 per cent of total sales.
