The author whose work inspired a hit science fiction movie has died.

Harry Harrison’s story Make Room!, Make Room! about the impact of over-population was the inspiration for the award-winning 1973 Charlton Heston film, Soylent Green.

Many of Harrison’s tales approached the sci-fi genre with tongue firmly planted in cheek. His series The Stainless Steel Rat featured a quick-witted conman who swindled humans, aliens, and robots throughout the galaxy.

Publisher Tom Doherty says Harrison “believed science fiction was important, that it caused people to think about our world and what it could become.” That was the message behind Make Room! Make Room!, which warned of the consequences of over-population and over-consumption of the world’s resources.

Harry Harrison was 87.
