A mysterious new disease that causes symptoms similar to AIDS has been identified by researchers.
Unlike AIDS, it’s not transmitted with a virus, but it does wreak havoc on the immune system.
A report in the New England Journal of Medicine says it tends to hit people around 50 and doesn’t appear to be contagious.
The disease weakens the body’s ability to clear infections, and leaves people vulnerable to viruses, fungal infections and parasites, but especially micobacteria.
Researchers say the disease may have a genetic or environmental link because all patients either live in Asia or have Asian roots.
