A damaged 1877 Steinway piano that accompanied many of the hits of Motown records has been restored, with a little help from Motown’s friend, Paul McCartney
The piano played on hits by Motown artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson from 1968 on. It was on display at the Motown Museum in Detroit, but had become unplayable. Sir Paul McCartney toured the museum, learned of the Steinway’s condition, and offered to help restore it.
McCartney will play the newly-restored piano at a charitable event at Steinway Hall in New York on September 18th to benefit the Motown Foundation. Then the piano will return to the Motown Museum in Detroit.
