Despite being the possible intended target of a political shooting, premier-designate Pauline Marois says Quebec is not a violent society.
Hours after the shooting, the Parti Quebecois leader told a news conference that people shouldn’t draw hasty conclusions from what she described as an act of folly, committed by someone who may be suffering from mental issues.
Marois says that she had no idea she might have been in danger when bodyguards whisked her off the stage during her victory speech and only learned after leaving the celebration that someone had died and another man had been wounded
Police are questioning the suspected shooter.
Police sources say the suspect’s 62-year-old Richard Henry Bain, owner of a hunting and fishing lodge in the mountains north of Montreal.
They are not confirming, or ruling out, the possibility that the intended target was the newly elected premier.
As for post-election life in Quebec, the province’s first female premier says she will introduce tougher language laws in Quebec and abolish proposed tuition hikes.
She said she had been hoping for a majority but that falling short of the required 63-seats won’t stop her from pushing ahead with her agenda.
